Buckyette - Candle Clock

My own version of a very, very old object. The Candle Clock has taken many forms over centuries of use, with the earliest evidence for a Candle Clock occurring in a Chinese poem by You Jiangu (AD 520). It is said that Alfred the Great burned 6 candles a day to keep time, while in monasteries monks had candles pre-notched by the hour that sat inside thin metal bowls. To mark time a nail was placed in the notched wax so that when the candle burned down to the notch the nail fell out and made a noise in the bowl.

The Candle Clock could be a timer while you meditate, cook or as an entertaining centrepiece on a dinner table. Designed to bring us out of a digital world and into our present, the Candle Clock encourages warmth, while providing light and timekeeping.

Specifications:

• Buckyette is glazed with walnut Tenmoku on the outside and Mora Farm ash on the inside.

• Size: 7cm height x 14cm width x 14cm length.

• Electric Fired

• Comes with a hand-forged one-inch nail.

Instructions for use:

• Warm the nail in the candle flame, then press the tip into the side of the candle. Be aware not to break the wick on the inside of the candle. The best position to stick the nail in is about a centimetre into the wax, on a slightly upwards angle.

• The wax will melt in its own time, and the nail will drop into the bowl below and make a noise. The noise the nail makes is entirely down to the angle and force of the drop from the candle. The further and faster it falls the louder the noise.
