A River from above

June 2022, 116 objects

A river from above stems from research into historic aerial photographs and maps of Waitaha/Canterbury’s braided rivers. Interested in the variegated paths of these river systems, their habits and developments, hemmed in by farming and colonial investments and infrastructure, this coollection of pottery visits the intrigue and beauty of an uncontrollable and rare river. Using sediments, rocks and materials from these rivers and other local sites around Aotearoa, Caitlin imagines a material collection born from these cold and unpredictable sites.
